Marketing Agency vs. In-House Team: What Makes Sense for Your Brand?

Spoiler alert: You don't always have to choose.

One of the questions brands face as they grow is whether to build an internal marketing team or hire an outside agency. And as someone who has worked on both sides, I can tell you there's value in both.

I've worked as part of internal marketing teams, and I've spent years leading marketing initiatives from the agency side. I've seen firsthand what works, what doesn't and where brands can get the most value from their marketing investments.

Here's something I wish more businesses understood: Hiring an agency doesn't mean replacing your internal marketing team. In fact, some of the strongest marketing partnerships happen when the two work together.

The Value of an Internal Marketing Team

Nobody knows your brand quite like the people working inside your business every day. Internal marketing teams understand the products, customers, company culture and business priorities. They're close to sales, operations, leadership and the daily decisions that impact marketing. That institutional knowledge is incredibly valuable.

But even the strongest internal teams can't be experts in everything. And expecting one marketing director to manage brand strategy, paid media, SEO, email marketing, social media, website development, creative production and analytics? That's a pretty tall order. Actually, it's pretty unrealistic.

Where an Outside Agency Adds Value

Between meetings, approvals, internal requests, managing projects and putting out the occasional fire, internal marketing teams don't always have time to step away from the daily demands of the business and focus on what's next.

And let's be realistic. With everything on your plate, how are you supposed to stay on top of every emerging marketing trend, know what your competitors are doing, understand what customers are saying, evaluate new technologies and keep up with what your analytics are telling you? You shouldn't have to. That's what you're paying us to do.

At Jamison Communications, part of our job is to stay ahead. We're researching competitors, studying market trends, listening to consumers, analyzing performance data, exploring new technologies and identifying better ways to operate. It is part of our daily routine.

We're looking for opportunities, questioning what's not working and bringing new ideas to the table. Because we're not involved in every internal meeting or daily operational challenge, we have the time and perspective to focus on these things.

We also work across different brands, industries and marketing channels. That experience gives us a broader view of what's working, what's changing and what might be worth exploring for your brand.

You're not hiring an agency just to execute a list of marketing tasks. You're investing in expertise, research, innovation and people who are constantly looking for ways to move your brand forward. Sometimes (almost always!), that fresh perspective is exactly what an internal team needs.

The Best Marketing Partnerships Work Together

Here's where I think brands sometimes get it wrong. They assume hiring an agency means handing over their marketing and stepping away. That's not how it works. It cannot work like that, or you are going to fail and waste your investment dollars.

Some of our strongest client relationships involve working directly alongside internal marketing directors, sales teams, operations teams and company leadership. We share data, collaborate on strategy, develop campaigns and make decisions together.

The internal team brings invaluable brand and business knowledge. We bring additional expertise, resources and an outside perspective. And when everyone is communicating, working toward the same goals and understands their responsibilities, that's when things really start moving.

Of course, we've also worked with brands that don't have an internal marketing department. In those situations, we can serve as an extension of their business, helping lead strategy and manage marketing initiatives. We do this for several clients. How? Jamison Communications brings together a talented team of two graphic designers, two copywriters, digital marketing specialists, a website developer and programmer, an SEO strategist and an account coordinator, providing our clients with a diverse range of expertise under one roof.

No single structure works for every brand. And there shouldn't be.

So, Which Is Right for Your Brand?

Before making that decision, ask yourself a few questions:

  • Have we done a marketing and process audit?

  • Do we have the internal resources to execute our marketing strategy effectively?

  • Are we missing expertise in specific marketing channels?

  • Is our team spending more time managing projects than developing strategy?

  • Are we keeping up with industry trends, competitors and changing customer behavior?

  • Would an outside perspective help us identify new opportunities?

  • Do we need an agency to lead our marketing or support the team we already have?

The answers will look different for every business. It's About Finding the Right Fit

Your internal team knows your business. A great agency knows how to bring fresh thinking, specialized expertise and new opportunities to that business. And when the two work together? That's a pretty powerful combination.

Your marketing shouldn't be about choosing sides. It should be about building the right team to grow your business.
